2014, a new wind comes to Bordeaux

No, we’re not reinventing the wheel but the world is changing!

Pour mettre tout de suite fin au suspens, 2014 est au dessus de la mêlée dans la globalité.
Et une globalité plutôt homogène dans la diversité bordelaise entre blancs secs ou liquoreux et rouges. Vous l’aurez compris loin d’être l’année de tout les superlatifs usuels, nous sommes dans le très bon voire dans le vrai.

In order to end the suspense: 2014 is above the fray overall. In general, it is fairly homogenous in its diversity between dry whites, dessert wines or red wines. You will clearly understand, instead of the basic superlatives, this year will be described as being “true.”

En effet, après avoir connu le spectaculaire 2005, le richissime 2009 et l’exceptionnel 2010 ; Bordeaux a fait de belles choses reflétant souvent la combinaison T²=terroir*travail (ex. pour les rouges en majorité : les 2013 à la teinte bourguignonne, les 2012 tendre et fruité, 2011 classique, etc.). Les viticulteurs, vinificateurs, consultants ont dû s’adapter, se battre, jouer de stratégie au niveau du vignoble, être pragmatique, faire avec la matière qu’ils avaient, décider de choix douloureux le tout pour accoucher d’un cru répondant à leurs exigences qualitatives. Le seul hic est sans doute le marché, sa volatilité, son économie aussi entre la trésorerie disponible, le change et le prix pouvant être jugé de fort dans les millésimes dit intermédiaires.

Indeed, having tasting the spectacular 2005, the rich 2009, and the exceptional 2010, Bordeaux truly reflected the combination “T²=terroir*travail” (that is to say, the unique intersection of work and terroir. For example, the majority of the 2013 with its Burgundian coloring, the soft and fruity 2012s, the classic 2011, etc). Winemakers and consultants had to adapt, to fight, be pragmatic, and work with the materials they had in order to come up with a cru that still responded to their high standards. The only hiccup is without a doubt the volatility of the market and what public opinions could be of vintages seen as merely average.

En bref, nul ne connait encore le prix de sortie que tous espère cohérent. Le niveau qualitatif s’annonce comme il suit : 2010>2005>2014≥2009>2012>2011≥2008≥2006>2007>2013.
2014 s’annonce comme un millésime où règne l’équilibre, reflétant son lieu de naissance mais également la main de son géniteur. En résumé, ce millésime, baptisé de millésime patient, est en fait un millésime révélateur des marqueurs du Cru.

In short, though no one knows what the release price will be, everyone hopes that it will fit the market. The quality level will be as follow:2010>2005>2014≥2009>2012>2011≥2008≥2006>2007>2013
2014 appears to be a vintage where balance reigns, reflecting their birthplace but also the touch of its maker. Known as the patient vintage, it actually shows the qualities of any classic year.

Avant de pouvoir délibérer plus précisément mes « notes » de dégustation, je peux déjà révéler que ce 2014 comporte des vins de très grandes factures pouvant aller jusqu’à la meilleur expression du Château …
Ceci est pouvant être dû à : un changement de main passé vers un apprentissage amenant l’optimisation du terroir ou actuel via de nouvelles impulsions, une remise en question technique, une évolution de philosophie dans l’objectif et bien évidement conjugué à Dame Nature ayant permis d’aboutir à un raisin favorable…

Before being able to dive into my tasting notes, I can also reveal that 2014 is made up of high quality wines that could reveal the best of the Chateau.
This is from the changing of hands from slow learning over time, optimizing the terroir with new technologies, and an evolution of the very philosophy of the Chateaux. Of course, all this is linked to Mother Nature and the grapes she allows to grow.

2014 revêt donc de très grands intérêts au niveau qualitatif, vous l’aurez compris, et sans doute tarifaire puisque les initiés mettent en garde « sincèrement » qu’il pourrait être un tournant dans l’organisation économique au cas où les prix ne seraient pas en adéquation avec le marché (mais on a déjà connu de tel avertissement en vain) ?
Alors, ne serait-ce pas le millésime d’un renouveau ? Pour chose sûr, 2014 marque bien la fin de la course à la plus grosse extraction, concentration, & Co. ? Un nouvel air de cohérence semble s’inscrire entre le triptyque : terroir, vigneron/vinificateur qui le respecte et consommateur à qui l’on porte attention.
Je conclurais personnellement en disant que les vins issus de ce millésime sont de vrai vin pour hédoniste et amoureux de l’identité avec la complexité que peuvent engendrer : un lieu et son interprétation ; le tout dans la verticalité.

2014 seems to be a high quality and lucrative year, which you will understand when you taste it. Connoisseurs will attest that it could be a turning point economically for the region, as the price/quality ratio should be in line with the market (But haven’t we already seen this before?)So would this be the vintage that sees the rebirth of Bordeaux? It is certain that 2014 marks the end of the race for the most extracted, concentrated, etc. A new air of coherence seems to be the order of the day: the combination of winemakers who respect their terroir and the consumer who is now paying attention.I personally conclude that the wines from this vintage are wines for hedonists and and those in love with the complexity that can arise from it: a place and the interpretation of it, while keeping its straightforward nature.

J'ai dégusté et commenté ce que j'avais dans les verres en faisant fi de tout préjugé ou suspicion concernant l'échantillon mais je me suis permis quelques extrapolations au devenir du vin dans la notation.

I tasted and commented on what was in my glass without judgment or suspicion regarding the quality of the sample but I did allow myself to make several extrapolations from the wine in my glass.
